The Somewhat Unsuccessful Gangsters

By far the coolest band on Ex Libris, TSUG are ostracised by fellow musicians, because they’re really really good, and won’t lend anyone their drum kit. One famed Portrush music critic declared their debut LP We Are The Strings of Knocklynn as “the most intimidating home recording I’ve ever heard”, which is what happens when you get two bearded fellows, namely Ryan H. Flem(m)ing and Wullie Asken, to listen to Pavement, The Fall and Modest Mouse for a while, drink some Cold Ones, go into The Radio Shack studio at 3am and play everything in one go.

“Wullie has used so much compression on that kick drum, I feel like my head is in a vice,” said Ryan cheerfully, who contributes both guitar, drums and vocals. Tam Asken also does some drums, while his brother Wullie handles guitar, vocal and production duties. Born out of a quiet desperation at seeing yet another witness protection family move in beside his suburban home, Ryan has crafted songs about long forgotten BBC radio jocks Mark & Lard, the fall and decline of Coleraine’s fish market, and whether to eat something someone else has touched or not. Their live shows usually end with massive fallings out, things getting broken and a caterwauling racket of noise.

They also have scotch eggs that go up to eleven, and have one of the best lyrics ever: “You did it on a skateboard/And you can’t even rap”.

They join Ex Libris in conjunction with Aaron McMullan’s indie label 1:33 Records.
