Nes Advantage
Communist Pleasures is the unwanted bastard child that Nes cast out onto the streets of noise-core. It comprises of the bits and pieces that didn’t fit onto The Sounds of Heart Failure, but were too good to leave on the cutting room floor.
In some ways, this EP represents what Nes Advantage are all about more than their oh-so-carefully compiled album. I Supplied The Sandwiches features acoustic guitar and keyboard, which would be perfectly conventional if it wasn’t for two vocals running concurrently throughout the entire track, using Morrissey quotes as lyrics. There’s even an quiet fireside singalong with And Some Leaves, proving that the duo can actually play proper songs with choruses and everything.
However, the tangled undergrowth of National Fright and spazz guitar/piano frenzy of Take This Brother, May It Serve You Well remind the listener that things cannot stay pretty and melodic for long. There are also numerous dead ends and cul-de-sacs hidden within the track listing: loops, unused samples, live versions and extended mixes also lurk within this disc. And the whole thing plays in one continuous stream of consciousness, as many tracks segue seamlessly into one another.
An essential download for any Nes enthusiast.
