On Benefit
Grilly
On Benefit is the four year, 8 track chronicle of grilly's meandering thoughts while on the financial - and emotional - breadline of university and subsequent unemployment. the album bounds effortlessly around genres, throwing math-rock riffs smack into the proggy 'the girl in the kid a top', experimenting with found sounds and loops on the epic 15-minute closer 'new boyfriend', and in between, bossa nova-metal fusion on 'the kinky friedman crime club', albeniz-influenced classical guitar on 'fanthorpe', and a convincing acoustic cover of the berzerker's defining death metal anthem 'forever'. there is room for humour too - 'klein bottle fish tank' deals with the problems of housing a fish in a four dimensional bottle, 'purple milk', a lilting ukelale lullaby, is the story of the fun that can be had while out shopping, and 'midweek cd purchase' reflects on the joy of an impulse purchase.
despite these disparate ideas and themes, the album flows perfectly in it's own way, with a unique lo-fi kitchen-sink sound; always guitar based but often well embellished, with keyboards, tin whistle, percussion, synths and sound effects.
the album is to be accompanied by it's sibling 'On Aggregate', consisting of the three contemporaneous e.p.s covering the same time, themes, and instrumentation.
thanks,
grilly.
