Perhaps more representative than their LP of what Nes Advantage was really about, Communist Pleasures details the failed experiments, aborted ideas and brief improvisations that dominated the Heart Failure sessions.

There are bizarre clashes of styles; ‘I Am A Body of Sinking Air’ sees hip hop beats paired with a funereal organ ballad, with a video game soundtrack airlifted in as the middle eight.  ‘Invincibility Doesn’t Last For Ever Jumpman’ takes a sombre piano part and fuses it to deranged Jonny Greenwood-esque guitar squeaks and squelches.

In ‘Asphasia (sp) (rprs)’ the excised outro from the album version is presented first forwards, then backwards, while ‘National Fright’ hypnotises the listener with an endless series of primordial groans from Fleming’s guitar pedals.

An essential listen for all Nes fans.
