Steeped in the drinking songs of Eastern Europe and romantic exploits of young man’s travelogue, the Girls’ debut effort is a cosmopolitan romp through punk, gypsy folk and infectious pop.
‘Teenage Slave’ delivers a punishing bass driven nod to the Pixies, while on ‘Titanic’ they have the energy and spittle of Leisure-era Blur.
‘Sweetness Our Love’ displays the musical range of the trio, as they change tack completely with Polack-infused accordions and plaintive vocal. ‘South America’ sounds like an outtake from ‘The Queen Is Dead’, with chiming guitars and pop hooks, while the monstrous finale of ‘Last Tango’ captures the raw power of their frenetic live shows.
