In their short life as a band, The Somewhat Unsuccessful Gangsters, or TSUG for short, managed to perfect the blend of slacker insouciance and deranged bedlam that had dominated the work of their heores, namely Pavement, Sonic Youth and The Fall.
On ‘Pacer Maker’, the influence of Stephen Malkmus’ solo work is clearly evident, before delivering a bone crushingly heavy outro reminiscent of Shellac or Fugazi. On ‘That Was Mine’, things begin with a free form improvisational section, perhaps how Charles Mingus might have sounded with an electric guitar. And on ‘Done And Done’ vocal melodies are employed to create a barber shop quartet feel on a keyboard driven pop gem that lasts less than a minute.
Recorded in a series of feverish nights in a garage in Ballymoney, Co Antrim, We Are The Strings Of Knocklynn still stands up as an inspired slice of chequered shirt indie cool.
