Yonder! Calliope?
Aaron McMullan
Aaron McMullan is a Northern Irish musician possessing a blend of styles, including folk, punk, country, and indie. He has spent many years building a committed fan base from both irregular appearances at local venues and the release of Internet only, free-to-download "net-records."

The success of McMullan’s previous lo-fi, hissy, reverb-soused recordings led, in part, to the development of this debut album - "Yonder! Calliope?" These recordings have been lusciously produced with many layers of instrumentation, developing a remarkable 'best of' record of love, loss and inspiration.

"Yonder! Calliope?" features no end of fiddles, cellos, keys, razor-blade guitar lines, and off-key hollerin’. It is a work bustling with ideas and thick with poetry - The work of a true wordsmith and songwriter.

McMullan is joined on the record by a cast of incredibly talented musicians and performers, including Ex Libris alumni Ryan H Fleming (Nes Advantage), Andy Warmington (My Attorney), Brian Magee (Patio Sounds), Rebecca Jones and Andrew Gardiner, who also took care of mixing, producing and arranging the album.

Reviews

"What he has produced on this wonderful debut are finely crafted, soulfully executed, songs that burst at the seams with humanity." - Richard Marcus, Blogcritics. Full Review.

"Think of Dylan's epic and poetic turn of phrase; Shane McGowans's booze-drenched jaunty bitterness; Conor Oberst's befringed emo; and, from now on, think of Aaron McMullan" - Greg Smyth, NARC. Full Review (PDF).

"McMullan’s backing band are the best thing about this album. They craft a loose and airy atmosphere that is often better than the former-punk’s acoustic folk." - Simon Gurney, Line Of Best Fit Full Review

"The other overall quality that makes the disc worth listening to is an increasingly rare focus on lyrics, and meaning. It's worth it to examine what's being said, you get something new each time." - Temple Stark, Blast Your Podcast Full Review
